None that will stay small enough to be kept in a 20gal for any considerable length of time, unless your friend is considering to upgrade to a bigger tank in the near future. Goldfish are also very social fish and need the company of their own kind, but a 20gall. can't really allow for that.

The only difference between a coldwater and tropical tank...is a heater, and I don't think they cost that much. Perhaps you could take him to your LFS, he may find other fish that he likes, once he has a good look at the variety of tropicals you can get.
At a pinch he could have 2 of the fancy species of goldfish which stay smaller than regular goldfish, BUT it would definitely not be ideal for the fish, stunt their growth and I wouldn't advise it. Your friend would have to be prepared to do more frequent p.w.changes/tank maintence and will still need to upgrade to a bigger tank sometime in the near future, which will cost money. Goldfish are often not the best choice to have as beginner fish either, because they do require a lot of care and extra work, the fancy varieties can be quite delicate/sensitive fish. I would advise your friend to research the fish he is interested in. BTW: It would help if you could use punctuation in your sentences makes it easier to follow. I am not sure what you are asking about the filter/lights Did the tank include filter & lights or do those have to be bought?I know the tank was a gift, but perhaps he could exchange it for a bigger one, if that is possible. He may really want goldfish, but from my point of view, the fish's welfare should come first. |
