Bernie or any one, please look at these pics and see if you can tell which fish is male or female................

I would have to say that Pic 2 is female and Pic 3 is male. I could easily be wrong though. At one time with JDs you could go by the tips of the dorsal fins, but with the introduction of hormone enhanced foods, that difference has gone away for the most part. Not entirely sure if it holds true with EBJDs but with normal ones you can go by the speckles on the face. With normal JDs the males have seperate speckles on their face whereas the females have blotches that run together. I would think that even with the coloration of the EBJD, that is probably one feature that would still remain at least somewhat intact.

I would say the same as Brad...Picture 1(or 3) is the male and pic. 2 is female..
I say male in pic. 1.. because of the more distinct pattern/markings on his face, the clearer definition of the point on the dorsal and anal fin, the more prominent dark spot at the base of his tail fin and the orange edge along his dorsal fin (which may not mean anything lol). Female in pic. 2 because she has the spotted markings on her face/jaw instead of the clear pattern. |

Pic 1 and 3 are same fish and I think it is female because of shorter tips on dorsal and anal fin. the second fish has long flowing dorsal fin and anal fin......Enlarge and look at pic 11 and 16.

LOL! I know pic. 1 and 3 are the same fish...I put 1 (or 3), because brad referred to no. 3.
I enlarged all the pics. and still think no. 1 is a male....I definitely could be wrong, but males have that noticeable one spot at the base of the anal fin and females have the facial spots that males don't. |

On second thoughts, you could be right Moejoe, I came across this...."Males have little or no blue on the gill plates while females have a good deal of blue pattern."

The thing that makes it hard is the fact that the Electric Blues have lost a lot of the regular Jack Dempsey charistics thru selective breeding......They have similar shape but the coloration and placement of spots is different......These fish are much les aggressive than Reg. Dempseys and do not get as large.

Then all that can really be relied upon is the fundamental characteristics between male/female cichlids.....males have longer, more pointed finnage, so I would stick with your original assumption. I’m sure it is correct, since I haven’t kept these fish LOL!
